Introduce yourself! What’s your name, title, how long you’ve been with Phoenix Energy, and a brief description of your role?
My name is Kenton Osterlund, I am a first-year apprentice electrician and am currently in school completing my first year in the trade. I’ve been with Phoenix for a year and have been helping build new facilities, add-ons, building trays, and pulling cable.
What inspired you to join Phoenix Energy, and how has your journey with the company been so far?
I had been wanting to get into electrical for a couple of years and I got talking with a couple of the guys at the gym. They all worked for Phoenix and told me to send in a resume. Since then, I’ve been indentured, learned some really interesting things about the trade and how it integrates into the energy industry, and met some outstanding people.
How do you stay motivated and continue to develop your skills in your position?
Starting at the bottom of the mountain, I get to learn everything for the first time, so when someone asks if I have seen or heard of something that is foreign to me, I see it as an opportunity to add to my skillset. My goal is to be well-rounded, thankfully there is a lot to learn between starting and becoming a journeyman.
What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career in the energy industry?
In electrical, do it. As soon as you think it’s something you want to pursue, jump on it and kick down the door to follow it. In the energy industry, I’d tell people to think about what they want in the long term. There’s nothing wrong with being king of the oilfield, but the electrical trade can lead into wiring up airplanes too.
What are your favourite activities or hobbies outside of work?
My favourite hobby is hunting and shooting/reloading. From the math of building a rifle and round that is accurate, to stalking an animal and butchering your own game, and cooking that cut of meat, hunting is a very committed hobby, but it also is the most rewarding. Jiujutsu keeps me healthy and humble; I’d recommend it to anyone.
What’s a fun fact about you that most people might not know?
I am a huge nerd and I can bake a damn good apple pie.
