Chris Callihoo is one of the co-founders of Phoenix Energy Services. With over twenty years of experience in the energy industry both in a field capacity and managerial positions. His journey began in the domain of instrumentation and controls, encompassing roles in construction, maintenance, and other fields. Chris’s leadership skills had him transition from leading field teams to taking on the presidency of Phoenix in 2014. Under his guidance, Phoenix has expanded significantly, now employing over 400 people and serving numerous locations across Western Canada. Chris has played a pivotal role in every facet of the company’s operations, from talent development, project management, and finance to acquisitions, growth strategies, business development, marketing, and fostering strategic partnerships. A key focus for Chris is ensuring the satisfaction of both customers and employees, a commitment that has directly contributed to Phoenix’s sustained success.
Upon returning to Canada, Mike continued to take on key leadership roles in both construction and maintenance within the oil and gas sector. Known for delivering projects on time, often ahead of schedule, and always with a strong focus on safety and budget, Mike has earned a reputation for excellence.
Driven by a shared vision to build a company grounded in integrity and expert craftsmanship, Mike partnered with Chris Callihoo to launch Phoenix Energy Services. Today, he plays a vital role in daily operations, taking a hands-on approach that has helped cultivate a highly skilled and reliable team. His passion for mentoring and commitment to customer satisfaction set the standard for service excellence—always troubleshooting challenges and delivering innovative, effective solutions.
Brian Shewchuk came to the University of Calgary to play football on athletic-academic scholarship to play football and completed a Bachelor of Communications.
Went on to complete an MBA in Finance and Global Energy Management & Sustainability at the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary. Most recently resided in the first Blockchain cohort at Oxford University.
Career has included business development, investment banking/analyst, and executive financial positions in start-up and established companies in the energy, engineering and new technology sectors. Have been with Phoenix since late August 2019 as CFO.
Jonathon Renkema, founder of Focal Automation and partner at Phoenix Energy Services, has dedicated his career to the fields of automation and instrumentation. He holds an education in Instrumentation Engineering Technology and completed his Journeyman Instrument Technician apprenticeship, gaining expertise in automation through a combination of mentorship and formal instruction. His professional journey has taken him across North America, as well as to projects in North Africa and the Middle East.
In 2006, Jonathon founded Focal Automation, which later merged with Phoenix Energy Services in 2020, combining strengths to offer comprehensive solutions in electrical engineering, cybersecurity, and automation. Committed to serving those who serve, Jonathon’s family is also a partner in a veteran-operated cannabis production facility focused on providing support to veterans.
Jonathon lives near Edmonton with his wife and three sons. He firmly believes that honesty and hard work are essential to success, principles that guide his personal and professional life.
Trent Johannesson brings over 34 years of hands-on experience in Instrumentation, Electrical, Automation, and OT Cyber Security. With extensive experience across North America, he has been deeply involved in securing critical infrastructure. Trent has led complete automation projects and has lead the development of a comprehensive cyber security program that significantly improved that client’s Cyber Security Maturity and Cyber awareness. Before stepping into a leadership role at Phoenix, his on-site experience was the cornerstone of his expertise. Today, Trent is passionate about sharing his knowledge through industry conferences, publications, and social media, focusing on practical solutions and best practices for OT environments.
That same year, Cam joined the Phoenix Group as an instrumentation technician, drawn by the dynamic leadership of Chris and Mike. Their passion for both the company and its employees resonated with him, and he quickly saw the potential for growth, even in a challenging industry. Over the next 10 months, he witnessed Phoenix’s rapid growth, as the company tripled in size despite an economic downturn—an experience that cemented his belief that he was part of something much larger.
Recognizing the opportunity to contribute more, Cam took the step to invest in the company and was appointed Vice President of Operations. His leadership style—approachable, hands-on, and focused collaboration—has made him a vital part of Phoenix’s day-to-day operations. With 17 years of industry experience, Cam is not only focused on the present but is also excited about the future of Phoenix and its continued evolution within the industry.
Outside of work, Cam lives in Grande Prairie with his wife and two sons. He’s proud to be an active member of his local community, and when he's not driving growth at Phoenix, he enjoys spending quality time with his family and giving back to the area that’s given so much to him.
Dustin Zukowski began his career in the trades in 2000, completing his Millwright apprenticeship in 2005. His early experience came through hands-on work with independent oilfield mechanics, where he quickly developed a reputation for his mechanical aptitude and relentless work ethic. Over the next decade, Dustin traveled extensively across Western Canada, supporting major oil and gas producers with troubleshooting and overhauls on all types of rotating equipment.
In 2014, he settled in Edson, Alberta, where he continued his journey in the compression industry. After identifying a gap in the market for reliable, honest service, Dustin founded Rodfather Compression. What started with four service trucks quickly grew into a respected and trusted name in the compression world. Over the next eight years, he built a strong team and a loyal client base, always focused on delivering high-quality work and straightforward solutions.
In 2022, Dustin joined forces with Phoenix Energy Services. What began with some spirited discussions evolved into a successful partnership that brought Rodfather under the Phoenix umbrella. Today, Dustin plays a key leadership role in driving the growth of the Compression division, continuing to do what he does best—lead with integrity, build great teams, and keep the industry’s engines turning.
Todd Murphy is the Vice President of Compression at Rodfather Compression/Phoenix Energy Services, bringing 15 years of experience in the Natural Gas Compression Service industry. He began his career as a Service Manager, overseeing day-to-day operations, and quickly advanced to the role of Operational Manager. In this role, he was responsible for key performance indicators, including safety performance, personnel development, customer relations, budget management, inventory management, and overall business growth.
Throughout his career, Todd has been involved in several mergers and acquisitions, where he successfully increased business levels through talent retention and personnel growth. These experiences have prepared him for his current role as VP of Compression, where he is committed to contributing to the continued growth and success of the organization.
Since joining Phoenix Energy Services in 2018, Dustin Callihoo has been instrumental in shaping a culture of collaboration and excellence within the team. As our VP, Electrical & Instrumentation, he ensures performance standards remain high, fostering an environment where the industry’s best-trained tradespeople thrive. His role also includes overseeing budgets, negotiating contracts, and serving as a vital link between our field teams and clients.
Born and raised in Grande Prairie, Dustin brings over 20 years of industry experience, a strong work ethic, and a calm, solutions-focused approach—especially under pressure. His deep understanding of customer needs and operational challenges allows him to consistently deliver reliable, high-quality service. A committed leader, Dustin prioritizes safety above all, ensuring every team member returns home safely at the end of the day.
Chris O’Connell serves as the Vice President of Tech Services at Phoenix Energy Services. Starting his career in the instrumentation trade in 2005, Chris gained valuable experience in construction before transitioning into commissioning and maintenance. In 2015, he shifted his focus to the field of automation, which led to various supervisory roles and furthered his expertise.
Outside of his professional life, Chris enjoys playing golf, watching sports, and, most importantly, spending quality time with his family, particularly watching his son play hockey and grow into the person they are becoming.
Steve is the Vice President of Safety Services at Phoenix Energy Services, where he leads the company’s safety division. With over 23 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Steve brings extensive expertise in managing complex, large-scale projects, particularly facility turnarounds. He plays a key role in ensuring safety, compliance, and operational efficiency across all projects, embedding risk management strategies into every phase of the division’s work, from planning to execution.
Steve excels in overseeing projects with intricate safety requirements, coordinating teams, and managing resources to ensure safe and effective completion. His deep understanding of the operational and regulatory landscape allows him to navigate complex, high-demand projects while mitigating risks and upholding the highest safety standards.
His past experience in various health and safety and managerial roles has been instrumental in shaping both his career and his passion for safety services. Over the years, he has gained a comprehensive understanding of safety management systems, which has fueled his dedication to maintaining and improving safety practices across all areas of his operation. His leadership has been crucial in fostering a proactive safety culture at Phoenix Energy Services. Steve earned his Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation in 2010, underscoring his commitment to maintaining safety excellence.
Cindy Huber is the operational heartbeat of Phoenix Energy Services. With a background in the banking industry and nearly two decades of experience in oil and gas, Cindy has been a driving force behind the company’s efficiency, growth, and internal cohesion. Since joining the team in 2004, what began as a part-time administrative role quickly evolved into a pivotal leadership position thanks to her initiative, versatility, and deep commitment to excellence.
By 2005, Cindy was already making major contributions—overseeing the implementation of a new operating system, streamlining policies and procedures, and strengthening the collaboration between supply chain and accounts payable. As Senior Manager, she now leads with unmatched expertise in inventory management, logistics, and supplier relations, while continuously identifying cost-saving opportunities and improving operational workflows. Cindy’s unique ability to see both the big picture and the smallest details makes her an indispensable part of the Phoenix team. Her dedication, institutional knowledge, and steady leadership have made her a trusted resource across every division of the company.
Lawrence Gervais’ dedication to providing insightful guidance to both governmental bodies and businesses for a deeper comprehension of Indigenous communities across Canada is truly commendable. Lawrence’s commitment to championing Indigenous Identity and promoting inclusion within our initiatives and projects. His expertise at managing meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities throughout our project lifecycles aligns seamlessly with our objectives. He has the ability to amplify the diverse voices of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities, we aspire to drive economic prosperity for their families.
Born and raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Scott has a strong connection to the energy industry and the region. Over the past 20 years, he has built an extensive career in the energy sector, specializing in plant and field operations. Scott hands-on experience in these roles have provided him with a deep understanding of operational processes, safety standards and team management.
Throughout his career, he has worked in various positions that allowed him to cultivate a strong technical expertise while also developing leadership skill. This practical knowledge served as the foundation for Scotts transition into the Director of Business Development role at Phoenix, where he leverages his operational experience to drive strategic growth and build strong client relationships in the energy sector.
